Paul Ritger, MD

Pediatrician

I share my birthplace with Frank Sinatra, Tony Soprano and the game of baseball: Hoboken, New Jersey. I completed my undergraduate degree at Boston College (pre-Flutie) and then went on to graduate from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Rutgers). I moved to Maine for my residency at Maine Medical Center in 1984 and have been a pediatrician in Portland ever since. Those 40 years of practice have shown me that the most important and most difficult job that any of us ever do is the work we do as parents. Your children are tremendous teachers; we just need the patience it takes to let them guide us.

Philosophical/personal influences include Jonathan Richman, Kurt Vonnegut, David Byrne, Jack Reacher and Leon Leonwood Bean. Professional influences include Dr. Seuss, Dr. Who, Dr. Spock (both), Dr. T. Berry Brazelton, Dr. Ferber, Dr. Strangelove and Doc McStuffins.

Lifetime/career achievements include being the pediatrician for two Academy Award nominees, an appearance in the documentary “Clash on Broadway,” collaboration with the Boston Police Department on solving the Isabella Stewart Gardner art heist and playing shortstop for a championship-caliber seniors baseball team.  Not to mention assisting my wife while parenting four awesome young people who have all become a credit to the human race. I’m looking forward to contributing in any way that supports your parenting journey.
