By Lorraine Laliberte, Physician Assistant
November is Diabetes Awareness month. What can you do to lower your risk for diabetes?
- Maintain a healthy weight. If you’re carrying a few extra pounds, losing 5 to 7 percent may be help prevent or delay diabetes.
- Aim for 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week. Just getting started? Speak with your health care professional about which activities are best. Start slowly and work your way toward your goal.
- Choose healthy foods options most of the time. Eat smaller portions to reduce the amount of calories you eat each day and help you lose weight. Choosing foods with less fat is another way to reduce calories. Opt for water instead of sweetened beverages.
