Prenatal Care

Welcome!

The birth of your child is one of the most fulfilling and challenging experiences of your lifetime. At InterMed, your health and the health of your unborn child is our primary concern.

We hope that you will take a few moments to read this information to help answer questions concerning your obstetrical care. If you have questions, please give us a call.

General Information

You will have a primary obstetrician identified; however, all physicians share the facility, as well as office and hospital responsibilities. We deliver at Maine Medical Center.

Pre-admission forms are provided to you and should be completed 4-6 weeks prior to your due date.

Appointments

Call (207) 874-2445, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm

  • Press Option 1 for Scheduling
  • Press Option 2 for Clinical Assistance

Occasionally emergencies will arise causing a delay in our schedule.

Typical Appointment Plan

  • 6-32 weeks: monthly
  • 32-36 weeks: every 2 weeks
  • 36+ weeks: every week

Some clinical situations may require a more frequent appointment schedule than outlined above.

We also offer CenteringPregnancy® classes, which brings together 8-12 pregnant women, who are due around the same time, for routine prenatal care. Each of the 10 visits is two hours long—giving women 10 times as much contact with their provider team. Learn more

Laboratory

During the course of your pregnancy lab work will be necessary. Tests required will be discussed with you as they are needed.

Ultrasound

We recommend an ultrasound examination for all of our patients in mid pregnancy to assess fetal growth and development.

Antepartum Testing

In late pregnancy and in some clinical situations, electronic monitoring of the pregnancy such as the non-stress test may be used.

Obstetrical Care Emergencies

It is important to inform us immediately if any of the following occur:

  • Vaginal bleeding that is more than a small show.
  • Regular contractions, 10 minutes apart and lasting more than 30 seconds; time contractions from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next.
  • Any loss of fluid from the vagina.
  • Any marked decrease in baby’s movement.

A Message for Moms-to-be

From InterMed Pediatrics

Over the next 9 months, you will be cared for by your obstetrician, monitoring all aspects of your health and assuring you the best environment for your baby’s growth and development.

Once your baby is born, we’re sure you will be looking for the best care he/she can get. Our pediatricians at InterMed can provide you with that care. As pediatricians, we solely dedicate our services to the needs of children, from birth through age 18.

We are all board-certified pediatricians. We have three office sites:

  • 84 Marginal Way in Portland on Marginal Way
  • 259 Main Street in Yarmouth
  • 100 Foden Road in South Portland.

We provide our patients with 24-hour coverage, seven days a week, with an on-call pediatrician available to answer emergency calls when the offices are closed.

Our entire staff is committed to providing the highest quality of care to our patients. We have had the honor of having the highest immunization rate in the state, and many of the pediatricians have received awards of excellence from the teaching programs at the hospitals.

We are always working on ways to provide better care for our patients. For instance, we have separate sick and well waiting areas for the kids. We also work with nurse practitioners, RN’s with Masters in Pediatrics, so that we may all spend more time with our patients.

We offer free prenatal visits for first time parents; that is, a visit to meet one of us prior to your baby’s birth so that we can get to know each other, and you can see our office. Usually parents make those appointments between the 6th and 8th months of the pregnancy so that they have a pediatrician picked out prior to the baby coming, especially if it’s early!

Feel free to give us a call and find out more about the office. We look forward to seeing you and wish you the best of luck with your pregnancy.
