James D. Dunlop, JD, MD

Dermatologist

My practice focuses on general dermatology and dermatologic surgery, with a particular interest in treating patients with skin cancers and marine dermatology (skin conditions caused by animals and plants that live in the ocean).

Prior to joining InterMed, I practiced with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation for Healthcare, Research, and Education (PAMF) in Santa Cruz, California. I completed my dermatology residency at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), my internship at Yale University, and graduated with honors from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. While at UVM I lived here in Portland for part of my training and fell in love with the area. Needless to say, I am thrilled to be back in Maine!

Medicine is actually a second career for me – I am also an attorney. I practiced intellectual property law in the New York office of a large international law firm before going to medical school and received my law degree from Vanderbilt. My undergraduate degree from Stetson University was in English with a concentration in the natural sciences. I rowed Division I crew while at Stetson and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Additionally, I earned a Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from the Stanford University School of Business while living in California.

Outside of work I have the privilege of serving on the board of directors of the Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation, which is one of the nation’s largest charities. Last year, PAN gave out over $400 million directly to patients with life-threatening, chronic, and rare diseases to help them pay for their prescription medications.

I also enjoy playing the cello, traveling, cooking, sailing, fishing, and skiing, among many other interests. As the oldest of five children, and with ten nieces and nephews (and another on the way), spending time with my family is a priority and being back on the east coast allows me see them a lot more.
