Robert Smith, MD

Infectious Diseases Specialist

After graduating from Johns Hopkins Medical School, I completed training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Beth Israel Medical Center in Boston, in internal medicine and infectious disease. Before coming to Portland in 1987, I was on the staff of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

I enjoy the opportunity here to combine patient care with active teaching and research roles at Maine Medical Center, where I serve as Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases. I have a strong interest in the recognition of emerging infections such as Lyme disease, as well as tropical infections and care of persons with HIV.

My wife, Peg, and I are the proud parents of three grown children and we all enjoy skiing, sailing, and exploring the Maine outdoors.
