If you’re pregnant and have seen recent headlines questioning the safety of Tylenol (acetaminophen), it’s understandable to feel uncertain. Recently, concerns have surfaced about possible links between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and developmental conditions like autism or ADHD.

At InterMed, our job is to help you navigate conflicting information with science-based guidance. You deserve to feel confident in the decisions you make for your health and your baby’s well-being. Let’s take a closer look at what the research actually says, and why leading medical organizations still consider Tylenol the safest option for managing pain and fever during pregnancy.

Understanding the research

Some recent studies have explored a possible association between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and neurodevelopmental conditions. However, these studies show correlationnot causationand often rely on self-reported data, which can be unreliable. Many also fail to account for other important factors like genetics, maternal health, and environmental exposures.

In contrast, larger and more rigorous studies – including a 2024 JAMA study that looked at 2.5 million children born over more than 2 decades – found no causal link between prenatal acetaminophen use and autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability. These studies used sibling comparisons to control for genetic and environmental factors, making their findings especially reliable.

What do the experts say?

Leading organizations like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) have reviewed the available research and continue to recommend acetaminophen as the safest option for managing pain and fever during pregnancy when used as directed.

They emphasize that:

  • There is no proven causal link between acetaminophen and conditions like autism or ADHD.

  • The studies that raise concerns are limited in design and do not provide enough evidence to change current medical guidance.

  • Untreated pain and fever can pose real risks to both mother and baby.

At InterMed, we align our recommendations with these trusted national organizations to ensure your care is based on the best available evidence.

Why we continue to recommend Tylenol

Pregnancy can bring headaches, back pain, and other discomforts that require safe, effective relief. Managing pain and fever helps protect your health, and your baby’s development.

Acetaminophen remains the preferred over-the-counter pain reliever because it is:

  • Proven safe when used as directed.

  • Effective at reducing fever, which can increase risk of preterm labor or complications related to infection if left untreated.

  • Safer than alternative pain relievers, which can carry known risks in pregnancy.

How to use Tylenol safely

As with any medication, use acetaminophen thoughtfully:

  • Take the lowest effective dose.

  • Use it for the shortest necessary duration.

  • Talk to your provider if you find yourself needing it frequently.

If you’re ever unsure, your InterMed care team is here to help you make the safest choice for your unique situation.
