I took a Women’s Studies course in college taught by a nursing professor. It focused on the U.S.
feminist health movement in the 1970s, consciousness raising, self-speculum exams and such.
These folks were learning the intricacies of their bodies, their cycles, their fertility, their
sexualities; they were taking healthcare into their own hands and challenging dominant
paradigms. After college, I worked at Planned Parenthood where I saw these values lived in
modern times. The care was mostly provided by nurse practitioners, and I decided to take that
path.

After getting my FNP license, I worked in general practice in low resource settings for several
years. I felt called to specialize in reproductive health and developed a passion for the ordinary
miracle of birth. Midwifery offered the opportunity to focus on the empowerment of women,
birthing folks and families, while honoring the innate wisdom of our bodies. Midwifery also
allows me to partner with people to make the best-informed health decisions by providing
evidence-based information and meeting folks where they are.

I enjoy making relationships with patients over the course of a pregnancy and beyond. I try to
honor each patient’s story and experiences, to help them find ways to honor themselves. It’s
important to help all people feel safe, well supported and as prepared as possible for big life
transitions. I really love witnessing the creation of a new family when a baby is born. A good
birth experience can set the stage for confident parenting. A challenging birth experience can
do the same– with the right care and support. I also enjoy the team aspect of midwifery care- we
partner with patients/families, as well as with physicians, nurses and other professionals, each
working toward a common goal of strong, healthy mom and baby.

I have lived in Maine most of my life and love the natural beauty of the four seasons, as well as
the rocky coastline, beaches and mountains. I’ve always trusted InterMed Pediatrics with the
care of my two daughters so I’m excited that the Ob-Gyn practice is now offering midwifery
care. I look forward to helping create an evolving midwifery service line to serve InterMed
patients in Southern Maine!

When I’m not working I enjoy good coffee, a good book, raising my two teenagers, live music,
staying active in nature or on my yoga mat and always trying to be the change I want to see in
the world! (Oh, and chocolate.)
