My name is Sarah Kim and I have been practicing psychiatry at InterMed since moving back to Maine in 2019.

I grew up in central Maine and attended Colby College. After college I taught at a residential school for children with autism and decided to pursue a career in child psychiatry. After moving to New York City to attend the post-baccalaureate premed program at Columbia University, I stayed at Columbia for medical school, adult psychiatry residency, and child psychiatry fellowship. Following completion of my training, I worked at the college mental health service on Columbia's undergraduate campus, and later at NYU and Bellevue Hospital. In my private practice in Washington Heights, I treated individuals with both psychotherapy and medication modalities, with a focus on perinatal mental health.

When I returned to Maine I was delighted to find a professional home at InterMed. I am embedded in the OB/GYN and Family Medicine Departments and feel fortunate to work with exceptional colleagues who value an integrated care approach. Every day is different and I am grateful for the variety of experiences my job allows. In a single day I may meet with a woman seeking consultation in advance of planning a pregnancy, a family looking for guidance on how to navigate anxiety with their elementary school student, a teenager experiencing depression, a young adult worried that they may have bipolar disorder, a new parent adjusting to life with an infant, a woman experiencing perimenopausal symptoms, and an older adult coping with loss later in life. Being invited to assist in a time of distress is a great privilege and a responsibility I take very seriously.

In my role as Medical Director of Behavioral Health, I am committed to growing our team so we can provide services to more patients. As a physician well-being champion, I am committed to supporting the well-being of our workforce. I believe when we take good care of ourselves, we are better able to care for others, and I hope to be able to care for others for a good long time.
